This Tuesday, I’d like to talk about one of my favorite pieces of jewelry.
I really love jewelry that means something to me. As much as I love a simple gold necklace, I love it even more when it has a significance.
Aside from small, simple pieces, I don’t wear very many pieces of jewelry unless it’s sentimental to me. I have three pieces of jewelry that I wear every day: my engagement ring, my emerald anniversary ring, and an Alex & Ani bracelet.
Olivia passed away on April 14th, 2017 of Alzheimer’s disease. If you’re interested in reading more about the kindest, funniest, most compassionate person, you can find that here.
After she passed away, one of her nurses, who has since become a beloved friend of my family, saw an advertisement for this bracelet. She said when she saw the bracelet, she knew she had to get it for me. I can’t tell you all how much it meant to me to hear her say that.
My bracelet says “you are my sunshine” on it. My grandma Olivia, my most favorite human, and I always sang this song together. Anyone in the room would join in. It was, in a way, our family’s anthem while Olivia was living in a memory care home. Even throughout the development of her disease, she remembered the lyrics to this song. Music was the second greatest healing power, not only for Olivia, but also for my family. It is only second to love.
The title lyrics speak true of her. She was, and is, my sunshine. She brightened my day, gave me the energy to do anything and everything I put my mind to, and radiated happiness and sunshine. I painted her a picture with a sunflower on it and painted the words “You are my sunshine” along with the flower, so she could be constantly reminded that she is a drop of sunshine.
It is incredible to me how much weight one piece of jewelry carries. Every time I look at the bracelet, not only am I reminded of a simple song that brings me happiness, I’m reminded of my grandmother, Olivia, and how lucky I am to be graced with the presence of some really amazing people because of her.
Here’s what I want to leave you with today:
The description on the Alex and Ani website says “You illuminate my world.” I want you go to be with those who make your days brighter.
Surround yourself with people who feel like sunshine.
